about

"The western Antarctic Peninsula region has warmed by 7°C over the past 50 years; the most rapid warming of any marine ecosystem on the planet. When I visited Palmer Research Station in 2009 the local effects of this warming were obvious and impossible to ignore. Sounds of melting and calving ice were omnipresent. The local Adélie penguin colonies were in the midst of catastrophic collapse, and subantarctic species, including southern elephant seals, were increasingly moving into the region.

Scenes from a transforming Antarctica:

1. Small bits of floating ice melt and roll around near the shore of Amsler Island, January 15, 2009

2. Adélie penguins at the ocean's edge on Torgersen Island, January 18, 2009

3. Southern elephant seals go for a nighttime swim in a sheltered cove on Amsler Island, January 20, 2009"
