"Since several years I am doing a sound survey, an acoustic monitoring of coral reefs in Penghu archipelago, Taiwan. During this long-term project, I designed and build an autonomous recording device, a rather pretentious qualification for just a submersible enclosure with a battery, hydrophone and recorder. This device can be deployed and record approximately 24 hours with an acceptable audio quality. Because of this experiment, I could make underwater recordings in other locations in Taiwan, such as Green Island , located in the Pacific Ocean. This little piece of volcanic land hosted a political prison where dissidents of the nationalist party Kuomingtang (or simply unlucky citizens) were sent in exile, especially during the White Terror. Nowadays the former penal colony has been turned into a Human Rights Center. I was invited to participate to a collective exhibition in this place, and my proposition was based on a collection of recorded sounds from the island, including this recording of snapping shrimps and unidentified fish sound.
